The popular form entered the record with Betty and Barney Hill's September 1961 account; the wrap-around eyes were drawn in Barney's 1964 hypnosis sessions, days after an Outer Limits episode showed a being with the same feature, a point the corpus itself raises. Whitley Strieber's 1987 Communion cover fixed the face, and Strieber says on camera that his sketch 'massively influenced' how the being is drawn today.

Descriptions cluster tightly: a bulbous head, very large black eyes, a small nose and mouth, a thin neck and limbs, and skin described as grey, tan or brownish. Guests add detail that varies by source. Tim Alberino relays reports that they excrete waste through the skin and smell of ammonia and sulfur, have no sexual organs and no teeth. Lyn Buchanan says a grey who stood while he knelt was 'eye to eye' with him, which fixes a height of roughly a metre. Charles Hall says the greys' technology is poorer than the Tall Whites' but that they are far more numerous, so that most craft seen are theirs. UAPGerb says that in retrieval accounts 'what always comes up is the gray'.

The cases that carry the archetype are the Hill abduction (1961), Travis Walton (1975), the Ariel School landing in Zimbabwe (1994) and the long run of abduction research by Budd Hopkins, David Jacobs and John Mack. Jacobs' material, as summarised by Alberino, has the greys running a hybridisation programme. Matthew Pines says senior Navy contacts believe a 'genetic collection' by greys recently ended.

Interpretations offered. Manufactured biological or cybernetic workers for a mantid, Nordic or shapeshifting intelligence (SPECULATION: Alberino, Jorjani). Humans from our own future, with the small nose, ears and large eyes read as evolutionary trend (SPECULATION: Michael Masters). Cultural overlay on an older experience once described as fairies, elves or demons (INFERENCE: Vallée and Pasulka as cited by Michels). Media influence and imagination, with the Hill and Strieber templates shaping later recall (INFERENCE: Michael Shermer). A genuine unknown reported consistently by unrelated witnesses (SPECULATION: most first-hand guests). The band records how well the pattern of reports is documented, not whether the being exists.
",

Charles Hall distinguishes his Norwegians from Tall Whites; the two groups must not inherit one another's encounter locations or craft.

Human-looking is an umbrella, not a fixed body type. The linked source-by-source dossier preserves different heights, hair colours, clothing and claimed identities. Brent Friedman describes a Scandinavian-looking man with longish blond hair on Orcas Island who greeted him by name and who, he says, 'spoke to me without opening his' mouth. When Jesse suggests a Nordic identification for the alleged Holloman occupants, James Fox instead relays Alan Sandler's description of Egyptian-like headwear and large eyes with vertical, catlike slits; Fox does not confirm the Nordic label in that exchange. Alberino retells a Karla Turner book account, with uncertainty about his recollection; it is not an abductee he personally interviews in this passage.

Where the accounts split is intent. The contactee frame has benevolent visitors urging disarmament. Jorjani's frame, built from Ingo Swann's remote viewing of a lunar city and from his own reading of Aryan myth, has a eugenic faction that is at once more advanced and hostile, and he retells a remote-viewing contact's story about three men at a diner who purported to be rebels from that society. This is not Jorjani's own encounter; the diner location is not established in the cited passage. Hall sits between: more patient and diplomatic than the Tall Whites, able to pass in a crowd.

Interpretations offered. A breakaway human faction with deep-time or time-hopping ability (SPECULATION: Jorjani). Ultraterrestrials or 'someone from Atlantis' (SPECULATION: Friedman). The 'good folk' of fairy lore under a modern name, who lie as a matter of course (INFERENCE: Jorjani citing Vallée). Wish-fulfilment and projection of ideal human form, with Adamski's testimony widely considered unreliable (INFERENCE: sceptical reading). The band reflects a long, well-documented pattern of reports, not a judgement that the beings exist.
",

He describes parents, children and elders, an underground base with hangars at the north end of Indian Springs Valley, and craft that he says outperformed the greys' and that he says confirmed Einstein was wrong.

The features that mark the archetype are height and pallor, a thin frame, a life span he puts far beyond ours, a high-pitched speech that humans strain to hear, and electronics that read and place thoughts. Hall is careful to say the telepathy is technological: 'if you didn't know better, you'd think they were able to do telepathy'. Lyn Buchanan separately describes 'tall white guys' going in and out of a craft piloted by a grey, and Brent Friedman relays local lore about 'tall white people' who keep to themselves, so the phrase circulates beyond Hall.

Interpretations offered. A separate visiting species with its own bases, older on Earth than the greys (SPECULATION: Hall). A story too long and too detailed to parse, with UAPGerb rating Hall the least credible first-hand witness he has sat through (INFERENCE). A modern instance of the taxonomies of non-human beings found in every religion, which Diana Pasulka notes without endorsing (INFERENCE). A composite of Nordic and grey lore attached to a real posting on the range (SPECULATION: sceptical reading). Daniel Sheehan relays a story from friends about a traumatised Area 51 worker 'led down into a basement' where he saw reptilian creatures; asked how they spoke, the answer was telepathy, in whatever language the listener knew. Sheehan also tells of a woman near ninety who found a friendly reptilian standing in her living room, who told her 'here I am' and left. Jesse Michels applies the word to the small 'J-type' Peruvian mummies: two to three feet tall, boxy bodies, faces like the Close Encounters beings, some with eggs inside.

Descriptions therefore vary widely, from a tall scaled humanoid to a small mummified body, and the corpus offers no consistent account of eyes, skin or gait. Jorjani's version is theoretical: in a Nordics-versus-reptilians framing he speculates that Nordics from Mars ended the dinosaurs, so the reptilian faction is cast as older claimant to the planet. Michael Shermer lists 'the lizard people' with the greys and 'the Norwegians' as culturally consistent archetypes.

Interpretations offered. A rival non-human faction in an ancient conflict (SPECULATION: Jorjani; the Pleiadian-versus-reptilian worldview Sheehan relays but rejects). Culturally shaped imagery drawn from serpent myth and film (INFERENCE: Shermer). Mislabelled archaeology, with 'J-type' a label for small bodies of disputed nature (INFERENCE). Nothing first-hand in the corpus: the pattern is thin and second-hand, which the band records.
",

As Jorjani summarises Vallée's Trinity, the witnesses described beings 'something like between a gray and a praying mantis', child-sized, bald, with teardrop eyes, no ears and long arms on narrow shoulders. Vallée's own telling in the corpus adds three fingers and a gliding motion. The account was collected decades after the event, so the archetype's first dated appearance and its first documentation are far apart.

The fullest first-hand description is a DARPA scientist's: 'big grasshopper big pre mantis thing big eyes and kind of a triangle head' that entered through a third-storey screen door, stood over him and conveyed 'don't be afraid ... we're trying to help you', before a violent sequence he says he cannot dismiss as a dream because his wife had been searching for him for hours. Lyn Buchanan says he saw a mantis-like figure seated in a row of human operators and looked away; he allows it could have been a soldier in a costume. Jorjani relays that the psychic Ted Owens claimed his powers came from two mantids named 'Twitter and Tweeter'.

In David Jacobs' abduction research, summarised by Tim Alberino, the 'insectalins' are the senior figures in the craft and the greys their creation. Jorjani takes a further step: one kind of grey 'can appear as a mantid. It can appear as an owl. It can shapeshift'.

Interpretations offered. The biological, organic species behind the greys (SPECULATION: Alberino, following Jacobs). A shape-shifting intelligence with no fixed form (SPECULATION: Jorjani). Sleep-state or dream imagery, which the DARPA witness himself weighed and rejected on the grounds of missing time (INFERENCE). Human pranksters or costume, which Buchanan raises for his own sighting (INFERENCE). Not literal insects, since 'they would have six legs by definition' (INFERENCE: Michael Masters). The reports are few but independent, and they disagree on scale: the band is contested.
",

In the corpus the term has shifted toward Hal Puthoff's version, described on the Rogan episode as a paper on 'beings that could have died off in a cataclysm', with 'remnant survivors' holding underwater and lunar bases and technology 'left over from that Atlantean period'. Tim Alberino, who has his own biblical framework, treats it as one component of the phenomenon but not the whole; Bob Lazar, asked the same question, says 'it really could very well be'.

There is no description of the being itself, because the category is defined by origin, not appearance. Guests borrow forms from elsewhere: Brent Friedman wonders whether the Nordic he met was 'someone from Atlantis'; Alberino and Michels toy with the antediluvian hypothesis that an Atlantean civilisation 'went off planet or under the earth'; Puthoff, in a 2022 debate, lists 'could be coming out of the ocean could be time travel' as live options.

Interpretations offered. A breakaway or remnant terrestrial civilisation, more advanced than ours (SPECULATION: Puthoff's paper as relayed; Michels). Interdimensional intelligences in Keel's original sense, continuous with fairy and angel lore (SPECULATION). A framing device that lets speakers keep the phenomenon while dropping the extraterrestrial claim (INFERENCE). A hypothesis rather than a report pattern: the band is thin.
",

He reads the grey's small nose and ears and slit-like eyes as where human evolution is heading, and names Hermann Oberth and General George Hoover as earlier figures who said the craft were time machines.

The idea recurs as one option among several. Hal Puthoff, in 2022, lists 'could be time travel' beside oceans and aliens. A congressman's briefing episode argues that if one steelmans the future-human case it holds as well as the space-alien case, and that the frameworks may be false dichotomies. Whitley Strieber describes visitors who 'see too far ahead in time and too far back' to have free will, a time-bound reading without the human-descendant claim.

Interpretations offered. Our descendants returning to study or steer their past (SPECULATION: Masters). Forbidden by thermodynamics, since 'far future humans can't come back here' (INFERENCE: Michael Shermer). A framework that fits the same data as the extraterrestrial one and is therefore not discriminating (INFERENCE). Its clearest account is second-hand: Strieber's secretary Lorie Barnes told him that in 1954, lying in bed pregnant, she saw 'this horrible looking blue dwarf and behind it are a line of others just like it', which told her 'We're not here for you. We're interested in the girl child you're carrying', and, when she called them ugly, 'One day, my dear, you will look just like us'. Strieber adds his own memory of passing a Madison Avenue storefront where 'a guy trying to in a brown suit' was 'being pulled back by these blue dwarfs', and of deciding not to call the police.

Dave Rossi describes 'this blue being basically standing very close to my head' during a night of white light, after which he says he acquired a sudden drive to study electrical engineering and quantum physics. The rest of the record is orbs rather than figures: blue orbs listed among Skinwalker Ranch phenomena, 'blue orbs that came in like 50 yards of people ... out of the ocean', and a claim relayed third-hand that Edgar Mitchell spoke of blue orb-like lights following the Apollo crew from the lunar surface.

Interpretations offered. The same visitors as the greys seen under different conditions, with the Barnes line 'you will look just like us' echoing Communion (SPECULATION: Strieber's own linking). Hypnagogic imagery in bed-bound witnesses (INFERENCE). Local shared reality diverging from consensus, Strieber's phrase for his New York experiences (SPECULATION). Electromagnetic effects on a ranch, which Michels tests with a magnet (INFERENCE). Few accounts, mostly one narrator: thin.
",

      "body_html": "
The Varginha case began on 20 January 1996 when three young women reported a creature crouched near a wall in the Jardim Andere district. As one of them says in the corpus, 'It had these things like horns right on its head. Its skin was brown. And it looked like it had some some kind of oil all over its body. It had a huge foot. and its eyes were super wide and red'. Their Catholic upbringing made them think of a demon. Other witnesses say soldiers captured one or more beings, that a young military policeman who handled one died soon after, and that a being was treated at a regional hospital.

The hospital account carried in the corpus is a surgeon's. He describes a forearm, a hand with an opposable thumb and three fingers, a face and eyes he looked into 'as if I were a child' being reassured, a being that 'didn't talk to me' but conveyed that 'everything's all right', that kept looking out of the window, and that 'wasn't restrained'. Another hospital witness says 'his face was white his eyes were red and he wasn't showing any suffering at all' but also 'hunched over, pale and sad. And he had no hair'. A witness at the crash site says the smell was ammonia rather than fuel. Brazil's former defence minister, interviewed in 2026, says the armed forces hold archives and that he would release them.

James Fox's 2022 film Moment of Contact gathered many of these witnesses; Fox says in the corpus that the town's belief that 'something happened here' and the first-hand testimony persuaded him to cover it, after Roger Leir pressed him to.

Interpretations offered. A crashed craft and captured occupants, covered up by the military (SPECULATION: most witnesses, Fox). A misidentified person or animal, with the military's account of a mentally ill local man and a stillbirth put forward at the time (INFERENCE: official response as reported). Demonic in the witnesses' first frame (SPECULATION: the girls' own words). A three-fingered pattern linking Varginha to Trinity and the Nazca bodies (SPECULATION: Michels). Many witnesses and a documentary record, but disputed at every step: contested.
",

He says forensic experts in Peru, Mexico and the United States 'all think that these beings were probably once alive', found no evidence of deliberate finger or toe mutilation, and that the imaging is public at tridactyls.org. He also says one body carries a fetus with three fingers and three toes, and quotes carbon dates of 800 to 1,700 years.

Three-fingered hands precede the mummies in testimony. Vallée's Trinity witnesses described three-foot beings with 'two arms three fingers and two legs' that glided. The Varginha surgeon describes 'an opposable thumb ... and three fingers'. Michels draws the line between them explicitly, adding that footprints were reported at Varginha.

Interpretations offered. A non-human population once living in Peru, with the fetus as evidence of inheritance (SPECULATION: Michels and the proponents he interviews). Constructed artefacts assembled from human and animal remains, the position of Peruvian authorities and most forensic anthropologists, which Michels acknowledges as the common view and disputes (INFERENCE). Ordinary skull elongation with unusual hand and foot modification, which Michels raises and says the scans do not support (INFERENCE). In the corpus Vallée agrees that 'we've been seeing these things for thousands of years', and Jesse Michels puts the thesis plainly: non-human entities may have used 'intermittent reinforcement confusion deception and absurdity to drive human historical narrative', so that 'Celtic leprechauns in medieval Ireland angels and demons in the Bible and what we now call space aliens are all just the same thing'. Fifty years ago, he notes, 'they were little men who came out of a big light'.

The folklore supplies behaviour rather than appearance. Jorjani stresses that 'the gentry the the elite fairies in Brittany and in Ireland' lie 'all the time about everything', and that peasants 'only call them the good folk because otherwise they'll get pissed off'. Brian Muraresku lists 'sylphs and fairies and boulder grinders and gnomes and elves' among the beings that 'inhabit this space'. On the Grusch episode the same idea is stated as 'analytical overlay': medieval witches on the chest, today's classic alien, 'Leprechauns, fairies, elves, angels, demons', one experience under changing names. Chris Bledsoe says people he understood to be from the CIA sent him James Mooney's 1891 Myths of the Cherokee, which treats the Cherokee little people, the thunder boys and missing time, and asked about his ancestry.

Interpretations offered. Folklore continuity, one class of encounter described in each era's terms (INFERENCE: Vallée; SPECULATION where it is said to be deliberate). Deception as method, with the visitors' unreliability a constant from fairy lore to contactees (SPECULATION: Jorjani). Cultural overlay on a neurological or sleep-state experience (INFERENCE). Autonomous psychic fragments or a free-standing reality, McKenna's two options (SPECULATION: Muraresku). The folklore is documented; its identity with UAP reports is an argument, not a finding: contested.
",

A 2026 episode on the phenomenon and religion notes that 'the jinn in Islam' belong to a pattern in which nearly every religion posits consciousness between humanity and God. In the corpus it has two carriers. Bryce Zabel recounts Harald Malmgren telling Pippa Malmgren that 'he saw footage of an alien, the one surviving being from Roswell being interviewed', and that the being suggested to its interviewers a way to shoot craft down using the X-ray projection of the Bluegill Triple Prime high-altitude test. Zabel notes the account fitted a JFK-UFO connection he had already supposed, and that such stories change little when told.

Daniel Sheehan's account is older in its setting. He says Albert Stein, dying in a Minnesota hospice, told him he had been an Army clerk-typist at Project Blue Book, typing up investigators' reports on some seven hundred sightings that could not be explained, and that at least one being was 'voluntarily talking with them', 'having telepathic Communications' while 'being interviewed'. Sheehan objects to the phrase 'hanging out in these bases' but does not otherwise describe the being. UAPGerb, discussing retrieval witnesses, says 'what always comes up is the gray'.

Interpretations offered. A captured occupant held and debriefed by a secret programme (SPECULATION: both accounts as told). Late-life confabulation or a wish to unburden, since both sources spoke near death and neither can be questioned (INFERENCE). A story shaped by earlier fiction and by the 'alien interview' film that circulated in the 1990s (INFERENCE). Two second-hand tellings with no documents: thin.
",

Richard Dolan describes it as 'dome-shaped kind of craft ... almost like a cone'. Robert Hastings summarises Hickson's account: 'examined by an oblong shaped instrument that hovered around him he was completely paralyzed only his eyes could move'. For years the abduction was told as Hickson's alone; Parker later said he too had been taken.

The being is unlike the grey. Dolan calls it 'very bizarre looking. It's got like a carrot ears', 'a 1950s version of an alien like in one of those bad movies', and says witnesses' drawings make people cringe, 'but look, it's what they said they saw'. The classic description adds wrinkled grey skin, slits for a mouth, and pincer-like hands, with movement described as stiff or robotic. What keeps the case in the record is the sheriff's decision to leave a recorder running when he left the two men alone; the tape has them speaking to each other in evident fear, with Parker 'freaking out'.

Hastings and, on the Lazar episode, Michels note that Pascagoula was where most American nuclear submarines were built, placing the case in a pattern of encounters at nuclear sites.

Interpretations offered. A genuine encounter with unknown beings, supported by the covert recording and the witnesses' consistency over decades (SPECULATION as to the beings; the recording is FACT). A hoax, argued at the time from the odd appearance and from a polygraph administered by a non-licensed examiner (INFERENCE). Shared hallucination or a hypnagogic state on a quiet riverbank at night (INFERENCE). Robot-like probes rather than living beings, a reading the witnesses themselves entertained (SPECULATION).
