In September 2019 Navy spokesman Joseph Gradisher told The Black Vault and other outlets that the three videos published in 2017 and 2018 depict "unidentified aerial phenomena" and that the Navy had not released them. Earlier that year the Navy had drafted new guidelines for pilots to report unidentified aircraft. Mick West dates his own interest to the same period.

Official responseThe Navy stated that the videos show incursions into military training ranges by unidentified aerial phenomena and that the term UAP is used because "unidentified flying object" carries a stigma.
