Ryan Graves gives the defining description: a pilot who saw one up close “described it as a dark gray or black cube inside of a clear sphere”. He puts the size at “About 5 to 15 ft in diameter” and says they could stay “out there all day”, “sometimes completely stationary” in “hurricane type winds” at altitude — endurance and wind tolerance his colleagues took to rule out ordinary drones. He adds that the geometric shape itself was the puzzle.
The most cited incident is a near miss: Jesse Michels retells how “the object almost hit the the pilot” when one passed between two aircraft, and notes the pilots first assumed the Navy was “red teaming our system”. Charles Hall, asked about Graves’ reports, describes “a ball inside and then stuff outside like a cube”, and Luis Elizondo lists “Cube jellyfish flowing red triangular craft” among shapes that behave “better than our airplane”.
Explanations offered: an adversary drone or balloon carrying a radar reflector (the geometry resembles a corner reflector), a classified US surveillance platform, and an unknown technology. Graves leaves the origin open while insisting the objects are real and a flight-safety hazard; because the reports come from multiple aircrew and were filed through official channels, the pattern is banded documented.
