Kenneth Arnold sighting

What was reported. Kenneth Arnold, a Boise businessman flying a CallAir A-2, said that near Mount Rainier on 24 June 1947 he watched nine objects skip across the sky "like a saucer would if you skipped it across water", covering the distance to Mount Adams in under two minutes. He reported it at Pendleton, Oregon, and the story went out on the wire. (FACT about the report.)

What followed. Newspapers coined "flying saucer" from his description, and hundreds of reports followed that summer, including Roswell two weeks later. Arnold was interviewed by Army intelligence officers and later became involved in the Maury Island affair. (FACT.)
