Kenneth Arnold's sketch for Army Air Forces, July 1947

Witness drawing. Arnold's July 1947 letter to the Commanding General at Wright Field, with his sketch of one of the nine objects — a crescent with a convex rear — from the Project Sign / Blue Book file. The word 'saucer' came from a reporter; this is the shape he drew.

An interpretation of the reports

AI interpretation of the wide V or boomerang seen over Phoenix in 1997 and the Hudson Valley in the 1980s: a row of amber lights along each arm. Witnesses saw lights, not a hull — the panelled surface is the illustrator's addition; not a photograph, not evidence.

A wide V or boomerang, usually seen at night as a row of lights along each arm, gliding slowly and silently. James Fox describes the 1997 Phoenix object as “this Boomerang shaped” craft said to be a mile across; a pilot reports a daylight boomerang below pattern altitude; Arnold’s 1947 objects are recalled as “little chevrons”. Mick West offers geese.
