Passaic, New Jersey, 31 July 1952

George Stock's photograph of a domed disc over Passaic, New Jersey — one of the early 'flying saucer' photographs reproduced in the 1950s press. Never authenticated; shown as a period record of what was reported, not as proof of an object.

Forms above a valley · 2:46:22

Two dark forms are distinguishable above a rural landscape. The broadcast reframes the scene. A zoom in the programme is not evidence that the objects moved. Exact catalogue number or film reel remains unresolved.

Smooth, stepped dome · 2:46:34

A close-up shows a smooth disc and concentric steps on its dome. This may be a crop of #638, but object-only similarity is insufficient to assert that identity. It is not counted as an independent observation.

The camera in the foreground · 2:46:36

A camera or related apparatus, with a silver top and cable loop, occupies the foreground; a small disc is above the distant landscape. The catalogue label is Berg-Rumlikon, 14 June 1975. Matching the reproduction does not establish object size, distance or the integrity of the camera-original.

Dark, elaborate disc · 2:46:39

A dark disc has a broad rim, a bluish upper section and an irregular crown. The image number remains unresolved in this edition. It must not inherit an analysis of a superficially similar photograph.

The golden close-up · 2:46:45

A gold-toned disc has a raised crown and broad flange. The crown, reflections and edge structure match the #200 detail reproduction. The label gives Bachtelhörnli, 8 March 1976; the date is a catalogue attribution, not independently verified. It is not labelled Wedding Cake. A processed reproduction is not a camera-original.

An interpretation of the reports

AI interpretation of the classic disc: a flat round body with a central dome and a metallic skin, as reported from 1947 onward. Not a photograph, not evidence.

The oldest reported shape: a flat, round, metallic-looking object, often with a dome on top, said to hover and move without wings or exhaust. Speakers trace it from the 1947 Arnold and Roswell reports through Cold War base sightings to hangar and archive claims. Swedish investigator Clas Svahn says the shape is now rare in his files.

Reported characteristics

Every value is a report, not a specification.

shapeFlat round body, usually with a central dome; sometimes described as two plates rim to rim, or as an egg with the offset removed.
sizeReports range from roughly double a car (Sheehan’s 40 ft photograph) to formations of small discs; base witnesses say tens of feet.
lightsSome accounts give a pearly white or silver skin with no lights; island witnesses describe lights around the bottom rim.
soundSilent in nearly every account.
motionHovering, formation flight “all synchronized”, and departure without wings or exhaust.
era1947 onward; corpus witnesses cluster 1947–1992, and Svahn says the shape is now rarely reported.

Explanations offered

  • Misidentified aircraft, balloons or bright planets

    INFERENCE contested

  • Classified disc-shaped test vehicles (Avro-type programmes) or recovered craft

    SPECULATION contested

  • A 1947 press template shaping how later witnesses described ambiguous lights

    INFERENCE well-supported

  • Genuinely unidentified craft of non-human origin

    SPECULATION thin
