What was reported. Late on 9 December 1965 a bright fireball was seen from Michigan to Pennsylvania. In Kecksburg, near Pittsburgh, residents reported an object in the woods described as acorn-shaped and the size of a small car, with raised markings, and said armed military personnel cordoned the area and removed something on a flatbed truck. What followed. The Air Force recorded a search that found nothing. In 2005 NASA said fragments examined at the time were from a Russian satellite and that the records had been lost; a court-ordered search in 2009 produced no further documents. (FACT.)
What the corpus adds. In the NASA-whistleblower episode a guest brings up the 1965 Kecksburg crash and a relative, Donald Hornig, later president of Brown University. Richard Dolan rates the case real when asked and says he does not believe the "Nazi bell" version. (FACT about testimony.)
Explanations offered. A meteor with no recovered mass; re-entry of the Soviet Kosmos 96 probe (whose orbit does not fit the timing); a General Electric Mark 2 re-entry vehicle. Supporters cite the consistency of the acorn description and the reported military presence. (INFERENCE.)
