Richard Doty

Richard Doty served as a special agent of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations at Kirtland Air Force Base in the early 1980s. He has acknowledged feeding false and mixed information to the Albuquerque businessman Paul Bennewitz, who believed he was recording alien transmissions from the Manzano weapons storage area, and to the researcher William Moore, who later said he had acted as Doty's channel. Doty has also been linked to the 'Aquarius' document and to the circulation of the Majestic-12 papers, and he was a source for the 2005 book Project Beta and the 2013 film Mirage Men.

Doty tells his story in two registers at once. He says he ran disinformation against Bennewitz to protect classified Air Force projects, and he also says he was briefed on a real programme that holds craft and a living being, which he described in 2016 to the film-maker James Fox and others. Because he is a self-described disinformation officer, researchers on every side treat his statements with caution; Greg Bishop's Project Beta records both the damage to Bennewitz and the difficulty of separating Doty's truth from his cover.
