Robert Salas says that on 24 March 1967 his guards reported a glowing oval object over the Oscar Flight gate and that the missiles then went down one at a time. Robert Hastings, whose father served there, built his UFOs-and-nukes research from this case.

Salas was a deputy missile combat crew commander in 1967. His account — a security guard describing a bright oval object over the gate, then ten missiles dropping off alert — is the best-known single case in the UFOs-and-nuclear-weapons literature and has been repeated in Congress-adjacent briefings.
The Air Force acknowledged the Echo Flight shutdown of 16 March 1967 and attributed it to an electronic fault; the Oscar Flight event Salas describes is not in the released record, which is why the incident remains contested while the base is verified.
