Robert Hastings is an independent researcher who has spent more than four decades collecting accounts from former Air Force personnel about unidentified objects near nuclear weapons sites. His book UFOs and Nukes (2008) and the 2010 National Press Club event he organised with Robert Salas brought together missile launch officers, security guards and radar operators from Malmstrom, Minot, F. E. Warren and other bases. He says he has interviewed more than 160 veterans.
The strength of his work is the number of first-hand witnesses and the documents he has obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, including base histories and teletype reports. Its limit is that the witnesses speak decades after the events, that the official records he cites often attribute the incidents to equipment failure or weather, and that Hastings interprets the pattern as deliberate monitoring by a non-human intelligence, which the records cannot support. In recent years he has also described his own experiences, which he presents separately from the witness research.
He is one of the most frequently mentioned people in the corpus, cited in more than a dozen episodes and interviewed once, and several of the corpus's military witnesses, including Salas, Richard Barr and Mario Woods, came to attention through him.
