Malmstrom AFB missile shutdown (March 1967)

What was reported. Robert Salas, then a first lieutenant, says that on the morning of 24 March 1967, sixty feet underground at Oscar Flight launch control, he took a call from the topside guard describing a glowing red oval object hovering over the front gate. Moments later the missiles began dropping into a no-go condition, ten in all. Eight days earlier, at Echo Flight, all ten missiles had gone off alert; that event is documented in the 341st Strategic Missile Wing history. (FACT about the testimony; the Echo event is FACT.)

What followed. Salas and his commander were debriefed and told to sign non-disclosure statements. The Echo Flight failure was investigated by Boeing and the Air Force, who reproduced a shutdown with a noise pulse but did not find the source. Explanations offered. The Air Force record for Echo Flight is a noise pulse of unknown origin; the 2025 press account says an EMP test.
