Lt Robert Salas says that on 24 March 1967, while on duty at Malmstrom's Oscar Flight, security guards reported a glowing red object over the gate and ten Minuteman missiles dropped off alert within seconds. A similar event was logged at Echo Flight on 16 March. The Air Force found no cause; a 2025 press account cited an EMP test.

Official responseThe Air Force engineering investigation of the Echo Flight shutdown attributed it to an electronic noise pulse of undetermined origin and recorded no UFO involvement; in June 2025 the Wall Street Journal reported that the Pentagon told it the shutdown was caused by an EMP test that Air Force personnel were not told about.
