What was reported. An Air Force statement acknowledged a communications failure between the launch control centres of the 90th Missile Wing and fifty missiles on 23 October 2010, attributed to a faulty circuit card. Robert Hastings, citing anonymous sources at the base, reported that during the outage personnel saw a large cigar-shaped object over the missile field. What followed. Wired and the Atlantic covered the outage; President Obama was briefed. The Air Force stood by the hardware explanation. Hastings published his account in 2011. (FACT.)
