Betty and Barney Hill

Betty and Barney Hill were a New Hampshire couple, she a social worker and he a postal employee active in the civil-rights movement, who said that on the night of 19 September 1961, driving home through the White Mountains, they saw a light that followed their car and then found they could not account for about two hours. Under hypnosis with the psychiatrist Benjamin Simon in 1964 they described being taken aboard a craft and examined by small grey beings. John Fuller's 1966 book The Interrupted Journey and a 1975 television film made theirs the template of the abduction narrative.

The couple's sincerity was not doubted by those who knew them, and the Air Force logged their initial report. Simon himself concluded the abduction memories were a shared fantasy built on Betty's dreams; sceptics have pointed to a science-fiction episode broadcast days before Barney's hypnosis. Betty's 'star map', drawn from memory and later matched by an amateur astronomer to the Zeta Reticuli system, is the most argued-over artefact of the case.
